I just received the book "Exhibition Design" today from Amazon.I was very excited to find the title because there are so few books on thesubject of museum exhibition design.I was however very disappointed with the overall quality of the book. I haveother W. W. Norton books ( Building the Empire State) and I own close to 300architecture and design books.I have never been so shocked at the poor quality of the photography in anyof my books. Some of the photos in Exhibition Design book were notsharp....some where so dark you could not tell what was really going on inthe exhibit...but most seem like they were photographed with a camera phone.I was even shocked at the poor picture resolution of the Ralph Applebaumexhibits (blurry non sharp pictures and poorly lit)... I have a couple ofbooks that cover the same projects and the photos in those books arewonderful...I assumed that companies like Applebaum send out a specificpress kit with professional photographs.I guess I have learned that I should always see a design book in personbefore buying it on line.

This book gives detail into what exhibition design spaces need including lighting, color, graphics, and goes into different types of exhibition design including narrative, interactive, and simulation. Each design example also includes good information on what the artist's message was and how they achieved it through the design choices. Very good choice

Bij gebrek aan voldoende objecten koos de ontwerper Atelier Brückner ervoor om het verhaal als een theatervoorstelling te presenteren, met decors. En Appelbaum, één van de invloedrijkste Amerikaanse ontwerpbureaus, illustreerde de vertelling van de slavenhandel (Museum of African-American History, Detroit) door levensechte beelden van Afrikanen in een schip te plaatsen. Zoals bekend benadert Appelbaums ontwerp voor het Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington de reis en het verblijf in concentratiekampen op akelig realistische en rauwe wijze. Bezoekers krijgen op hun tocht de naam van een al dan niet omgekomen Holocaustslachtoffer mee.Bij wetenschapsmusea zijn het vaak technische spektakelstukken die de aandacht trekken. Imagination bijvoorbeeld ontwierp in het Orange Imaginarium (genoemd naar de telecommunicatiesponsor) van Explore At-Bristol een installatie met optische fiberkabels. Samen vormen ze een lichtgevend woud. Door aan een draad te trekken wordt een animatie geactiveerd. Tot dezelfde categorie rekent Dernie het veelbesproken Weather Project van beeldend kunstenaar Olafur Eliasson in de Turbinehal van Tate. Na het Weather Project zou je de op film geïnspireerde exposities en installaties van Peter Greenaway verwachten, maar hij ontbreekt in het boek.Bij de traditioneler ingerichte presentaties is het interessant te zien hoe verschillend eenzelfde tentoonstelling in de drie verschillende vestigingen van een Guggenheim Museum (New York, Bilbao en Las Vegas) staat. In alle gevallen ontwierp architect Frank Gehry een expositie met motorfietsen. Hij legde licht krommende, spiegelende `linten' door de ruimte en plaatste daar de motoren op. In New York integreerde hij als contrast zelfs een met een lint vergelijkbare maar dan verticaal krommende roestsculptuur van Richard Serra uit de collectie in de motorshow. Verbluffend. In Las Vegas stond dezelfde expositie in een veel hogere ruimte, waarin Gehry gigantische bollende zeilen en foto's ophing.Casson Mann uit Londen is als bureau zowel in het boek als op de expositie in Platform 21 aanwezig. Uiteraard werkte de presentatie van diverse tentoonstellingen op de panoramische schermen met bewegende beelden in Platform beter dan in boekvorm. Casson Mann maakte van een tamelijk statisch onderwerp als het leven van Winston Churchill (deel van het Imperial War Museum, Londen) welbeschouwd een filmleader. Een tijdsbalk belicht Churchills lange en veelbewogen leven. Op sleutelmomenten "opent" de balk zich en verschijnt aanvullend beeld.Deze uitgesproken multimediatechniek werkt uitstekend omdat hij een geïntegreerd deel van de permanente expositie uitmaakt en er niet als extra laag bovenop ligt.Popcultuur was de inspirator voor de Opel-stand op de Geneefse autosalon. Het Zwitserse bureau Bellprat liet zich inspireren door de computergemanipuleerde videoclips van The Pet Shop Boys maar ook door het serene werk van de videokunstenaar Bill Viola.Ontwerper François Corvino keek voor een presentatie over de evolutie voor het Natural History Museum in Washington duidelijk naar educatieve Disney-films zoals die Disneyland te zien zijn. Niet alleen de beelden maar ook de muziek en hoorbare voetstappen bepalen de experience. In het nog te openen BMW Museum van Baur nemen monumentale filmbeelden bezit van de wanden en geven het vaak mausoleumachtige fenomeen `automuseum' net de nodige extra dynamiek.Terug in het boek zie je hoe architect Jean Nouvel het Guggenheim New York onderdompelt in duister om met theatrale belichting de luster en luister van de Mexicaanse kerkkunst uit de barok tevoorschijn te toveren.Jammer genoeg noemt men in het uiterst gevarieerde en informatieve boek (met detailfoto's en verduidelijkende plattegronden) met meer tijdelijke dan permanente presentaties geen budgets.Verder zou meer aandacht voor de invloed van multimedia als vierde dimensie, die tijd en (omloop)snelheid bepalen en het nodige technisch onderhoud vergen, niet overbodig geweest zijn.Anders dan in Platform, waar ze als gastheren optraden, ontbreken Opera Ontwerpers en Kossmanndejong en hun collega-Nederlandse ontwerpbureaus in het tamelijk Angelsaksisch gerichte boek. Desalniettemin is Exhibition Design als actueel en rijk uitgevoerd overzichtsboek zowel voor ontwerpers als museale tentoonstellingsmakers een standaardwerk.

Now in paperback, The Language of the Global Polis explores Neurath's ideas on the modern metropolis, his fascination with visual media and the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics and the ways in which Neurath attempted to internationalize the aims of his Museum of Society and Economy through collaborations with CIAM and Otlet and by establishing satellite museums across the world. Both scholarly and accessible, Vossoughian's text offers a new perspective to one of the most formidable intellectuals of the interwar period.
Otto Neurath (1882-1945) was a philosopher, economist and information designer. His work in all of these fields was unified by a wholesale rejection of metaphysics (as expressed in the philosophy of Logical Positivism) and his desire to construct universal knowledge systems to streamline information flow, the most famous of which are his Universal Silhouettes (for example the male and female silhouette son bathroom doors, and road signs such as the car swerving). He fled his native Austria after the Nazi Anschluss and eventually settled in Oxford, England, where he founded the Isotype Institute.
